When drawing illustrations, hands are one of the toughest parts to get right. The complex joint movements, the way fingers bend, the angle of the palm... And when you try to photograph your own hand as a reference, it's nearly impossible to get the ideal angle while holding your smartphone.
That's why I built "Hand Trace Camera" - a tool that overlays your rough hand sketch semi-transparently on the camera feed, letting you capture reference photos at exactly the pose and angle you need.

All processing happens entirely within the browser, so your images and photos are never sent externally.
The Challenge of Reference Photography
Hands are one of the most structurally complex parts of the human body. Each of the five fingers has three joints, and when you factor in wrist angle, there are nearly infinite pose variations.
Common frustrations with reference photography:
- It's physically difficult to photograph your own hand at the angle you want to draw
- Pressing the shutter button throws off your pose
- It's hard to compare your sketch with your actual hand positioning while shooting
- Photographing your non-dominant hand feels unnatural
"Hand Trace Camera" solves these problems with an overlay approach that superimposes your rough sketch on the camera feed.
What Is This Tool?

It's a tool that overlays your rough hand sketch semi-transparently on the camera feed, allowing you to capture the perfect reference photo.
It comes in handy when you've decided on a hand pose but can't quite nail the exact form, when you need to check subtle finger angles, or when you want to accurately depict how a hand grips an object.
Since you can freely adjust the sketch's opacity, you can compare your real hand with the overlay and find the optimal angle and pose.
Features

- Overlay your uploaded image semi-transparently on the camera feed and capture while checking in real time
- Freely adjust opacity from 0-100% for fine control over the balance between sketch and live view

- On mobile devices, use one finger to move and two fingers to pinch-zoom and rotate
- Supports front/back camera switching (on devices with multiple cameras)
- Saves as high-resolution 900x1200 pixel PNG images in a 3:4 portrait aspect ratio
