How this tool works
This tool is for illustrators who want to see their character in different color schemes without any color-theory knowledge. Upload an illustration and it generates a catalog of ten recolor variations of your actual artwork — skin tones and outlines are auto-detected and kept unchanged by default. Recoloring is applied as a per-cluster hue/saturation/value transformation rather than flat fills, so gradients and shadows are preserved. Because every candidate is generated from a random seed, toggling which colors are kept never scrambles the scheme you picked. All processing is completed locally in the browser, and uploaded images are never sent to a server.
- Deterministic extraction: Colors are clustered with k-means++ in CIELAB space using a fixed random seed, so the same image always yields the same palette and the same initial catalog.
- Shading-preserving recolor: Each color cluster is recolored by a hue/saturation/value delta transformation instead of a flat fill, keeping gradients, shadows, and highlights intact.
- Skin and outline detection: Skin-like colors and dark outline colors are detected heuristically and kept unchanged by default. You can toggle any of them at any time.
Character Color Analyzer
Analyze the color balance of character illustrations locally in your browser. Upload an image to visualize palette balance and study your own work or reference pieces.
v2.0.0(2026/07/04)
- Complete redesign: upload an image and ten recolor variations appear — just tap the one you like
- Skin tones and outlines are locked automatically. Toggle any color with a chip tap or by clicking the image
- Improved skin detection so outfits and backgrounds are less likely to get locked
- Improved recoloring keeps gradients and shading intact
- Black hair and black outfits can now be recolored too
- Toggling locked colors no longer changes the scheme you picked
- Candidate labels now use plain words (Surprise me / Pastel / Vivid / Muted / Cool / Warm / Dark / Inverted / One-tone / Neighbor hues)
- Shuffle regenerates all ten candidates at once
- Save the recolored image directly as a PNG (a before/after comparison sheet is also available)
- Added an original/recolored toggle and a clickable color bar (copies the color code) to the preview
- The same image now always produces the same extraction and initial candidates
- Redesigned the upload screen and removed the tutorial modal
- Notifications now use toast messages
