Comparing spawn orientation, partitions, and seating arrangements in the same room. How to place things so a first-time visitor finds a seat, and how side-by-side versus face-to-face changes conversation.

You can place floors, walls, and lighting now. But actually inviting people reveals something odd.

The person who walks in is facing a wall. They stop in the middle of the room. There are chairs, but they don't seem to know which one to take.

It looks finished and feels uncomfortable. This article changes only the arrangement in the same room, so a first-time visitor can reach a seat.

Four things comfortable rooms share

Small rooms where people stay mostly share the same conditions. Lavishness isn't one of them.

Entrance, path, and place to stay, connected
  • One destination is visible: The moment you walk in, you know "I should sit over there." Rooms that are only wide floor leave everyone standing in the middle
  • Seats have something behind them: A wall, a partition, a window. Island seats open on all four sides don't settle in VR
  • Conversation distance is within voice range: Voices in VRChat fall off with distance. A large round table means conversation with the person opposite doesn't hold
  • Paths and places are separate: The route from the entrance shouldn't cut in front of people who are talking

The important part is building one core where two to four people can naturally sit, first. A bench, a table, and a light at floor level by a window keeps people around better than a chair in the middle of a wide hall.

Add size after the core exists. An empty 12m floor looks like a vacant lot, not a room.

Hands-On: Change the arrangement and walk it

Compare spawn orientation, a partition, and seating orientation in the same room. The trick is not moving the furniture — change one thing at a time.

1. Build a room for comparison

Save as Assets/Scenes/WorldLab_Layout.unity via "File → Save As" before you start.

Initial arrangement: a table and benches at the back, spawn point toward the viewer

Keeping the floor (top at Y=0, 6m square), add the following. All Rotations are (0, 0, 0), Box Colliders enabled, Is Trigger off.

Don't build the near wall or the ceiling. The near side serves as the entrance.

The benches are stand-ins marking where people sit; they get no sitting function at this stage. We're comparing arrangements, so the shapes are enough.

2. Compare spawn orientations

Place SpawnPoint at (0, 0.1, -2.2) with Rotation (0, 0, 0). In VRCWorld's Scene Descriptor, register it under Spawns, set Spawn Radius to 0, and Spawn Orientation to Align Player With Spawn Point.

With Rotation at 0, the spawn point faces into the room, toward the table.

Press Play and look straight ahead before walking. Seeing the table and benches with open floor in front of you means it worked.

Keeping the furniture identical, comparing spawn orientation at 0 and 180

Now stop Play, set only the SpawnPoint's Rotation Y to 180, and Play again.

This time you appear with your back to the seats. Same room, same furniture, and no idea where to go.

What you show first shouldn't be a sign — it should be the place where people gather. Walls, the back of a door, mirrors, and blank floor are all things not to show on arrival.

Once you've confirmed it, set Y back to 0. If you add one refinement, an angle that puts the seating cluster diagonally ahead is easiest to work with. Squarely ahead feels like being pushed onto a stage; directly to the side leaves nothing to look at.

Leave two or three paces of clearance around the spawn point. VR landings wobble a little, and simultaneous arrivals overlap. Don't put it in the middle of a conversation circle.

3. Change sightlines with a partition

Try putting one partition to the near-left of the room.

Press Play and walk. With the partition there, the line of sight from the entrance is guided to the table at the back. At the same time, the path settles toward the right.

Try shifting the partition along Z to -1.5 and 0.5 as well. Block too much and the seats disappear; too little and it does nothing. The good position keeps the seats visible while narrowing the path to one.

Height matters too. At 1.8m it blocks the view entirely; at 1.2m the heads of seated people show. "You sense someone is back there but can't see them head-on" makes a room easy to enter.

4. Don't close the circle with benches

Leave a gap in the bench arrangement so people can join later

Right now two benches face each other. It's tempting to add a third and enclose the table completely.

Don't close it. Blocking three sides leaves nowhere for a later arrival to enter. Joining the conversation would mean walking behind someone to reach an open seat, and that alone makes people hesitate.

Leave one side open. New arrivals join the circle from the open side.

Side-by-side and face-to-face change the conversation

The orientation of two chairs alone changes how people spend time there. This is worth actually sitting down to compare.

Side-by-side looks at the same view; face-to-face looks at each other

Side-by-side assumes looking in the same direction. You watch the view out the window or across the room together. Being together without meeting eyes makes room for silence that isn't awkward. When you want to talk, turning your body slightly inward is enough.

Face-to-face is for conversation itself. The other person's face sits at the center of your view, so talk flows. Silences stand out too.

VR adds its own wrinkle. An avatar's gaze and the player's actual viewing direction don't match. You may think you're meeting someone's eyes while appearing to look at their forehead or chest. Squarely opposite tends to leave only that "being stared at" pressure.

So even for face-to-face, offset the shoulders slightly. Just fifteen degrees off square makes it much easier.

To try it, move LayoutBenchLeft and LayoutBenchRight so both face the back wall (side-by-side) and walk it. The same room feels like a completely different place.

Avoid putting four or more people all face-to-face. It becomes unclear who you should be talking to, so building several two-person cores is more natural.

That last one gets forgotten. Always try sitting, standing up, and walking away. A bench right against the wall leaves you stuck the moment you stand.

If a friend can come in, the best test is having them walk it with no explanation. Where they stopped and what they looked at are exactly what needs fixing.

Bonus: Good to Know Up Front

  • Avatar heights vary wildly: Matching seat height precisely will never fit everyone. Aim around 40–45cm and don't over-refine it
  • Some people play seated: People using VR while seated have eye level down around 1.1m. Put important signs and buttons where they're readable from lower down
  • Brightness guides too: Slightly brighter at the seats and slightly darker at the entrance draws people toward the light naturally. It works better than a sign
  • Sound creates a place too: A small ambient sound near the seats makes that spot feel like somewhere you're allowed to be. Covered in BGM and spatial audio
  • Don't put a mirror facing the entrance: Seeing a mirror first makes people look at their own avatar instead of the room. Mirrors go at the edge

Summary

Comfort comes from arrangement, not atmosphere.

  • Build one core where two to four people can sit first. Expand afterwards
  • Put the spawn at the edge, oriented so the seating cluster is diagonally ahead
  • Don't close the circle. Leave one side open so people can join later
  • Side-by-side is a place to be quiet, face-to-face is a place to talk. Offset from square slightly

The question to ask when the arrangement confuses you is: "Standing at the entrance without moving, can I see somewhere to sit?" If not, fix the orientation or the partition.

Once the arrangement is set, add sound in BGM and spatial audio, or settle the light in lighting and baking. To make the chairs sittable, placing a chair you can sit in is the entry point.
